About the role

The IT Technician (Level 1) provides first-line technical support across end-user computing, core business applications, network hardware and infrastructure. This role is the first point of contact for IT incidents and service requests, ensuring day-to-day continuity of the organisation's IT environment while building toward greater ownership of systems administration and network engineering tasks over time.

Minimum requirements

  • Matric (Grade 12)
  • Fluent in English (written and spoken)
  • Valid driver's licence
  • Basic networking knowledge, including IP addresses, subnets, and basic LAN/Wi-Fi concepts
  • Understanding of Windows operating systems
  • Strong knowledge of computer and laptop hardware
  • Strong customer service orientation

Advantageous skills and qualifications

  • Linux capabilities (installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting)
  • CompTIA A+ certification
  • CompTIA Network+ certification
  • Exposure to Microsoft 365 administration
  • Experience with Active Directory user management
  • Familiarity with remote support tools
  • Experience working with ticketing or helpdesk systems
  • Exposure to virtualisation (Proxmox), firewalls (OPNsense), or configuration management (Ansible) is a strong advantage

Areas of responsibility

1. Service desk and end-user support

  • Log, triage, and manage all incidents and service requests via the ticketing system, ensuring accurate categorisation and timely updates.
  • Provide first-line support for the Microsoft 365 suite, including Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, OneDrive and SharePoint.
  • Assist with basic SharePoint site and library access issues and permission queries, escalating structural changes as required.
  • Deliver a professional, customer-focused support experience for all end users.

2. Desktop, server and operating-system support

  • Install, configure, and reload Microsoft Windows operating systems on laptops and desktops.
  • Provide first-line Linux (Ubuntu) support, including basic installation, updates, and troubleshooting.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose laptop, desktop, and server hardware issues, performing root-cause analysis and documenting findings.
  • Perform hardware installations, replacements, and upgrades.

3. Network and infrastructure support

  • Install, configure and maintain network printers and scanners, resolving connectivity and driver issues.
  • Support day-to-day operation of Aruba network devices and UniFi switches and access points, including basic configuration, cabling, and fault diagnosis.
  • Assist senior IT and network staff with Proxmox virtual-machine provisioning and basic maintenance tasks under supervision.
  • Assist with basic OPNsense firewall tasks, including rule verification and connectivity checks, and WireGuard VPN peer setup under guidance from senior staff.
  • Execute Ansible playbooks as directed to support standard configuration and deployment tasks, escalating unexpected results.
  • Install and maintain physical IT infrastructure, including cabling, containment, racking, and associated hardware.
  • Perform the same physical infrastructure and support tasks for lamproom systems when required.

4. Documentation, asset management and escalation

  • Maintain accurate documentation of IT assets, configurations, and support activities.
  • Assist with procurement by raising orders for new ICT equipment.
  • Purchase and set up new hardware for internal personnel, including configuration, testing and handover, and update asset registers accordingly.
  • Escalate complex technical issues to senior IT staff with clear diagnostic notes and steps already attempted.
